Deepa’s stepdad: Where’s Islamic justice?

Mohd Sofi Abdullah says Pusat Dakwah Islamiah Negeri Sembilan is practically teaching people how to abuse Islam.
Mohd Sofi Yusof 2JELEBU: Islam’s image is taking a beating because of the irresponsible attitude of some Muslims, particularly those in authority, according to the stepfather of S Deepa, the woman whose son was recently abducted by her former husband.
“Islam is a very fair religion but I don’t see any fairness or justice in my daughter’s case,” said Mohd Sofi Abdullah, a Malay-Muslim whose wife is a convert from Hinduism to Islam.
He was speaking to FMT about the suffering that Deepa, a Hindu, has been going through since her husband, Izwan Viran Abdullah, converted to Islam.
Last week, the Seremban High Court granted Deepa a divorce from Izwan and gave her full custody of her two children, a girl aged nine years and a boy aged six.
Barely 48 hours later, Izwan allegedly snatched the boy from outside Deepa’s house in Jelebu and reportedly assaulted her in the process.
The police have refused to act on the alleged abduction.
Sofi, 53, said the treatment that Deepa had been subjected to by Izwan and religious authorities went against Islam’s core value of justice.
“Now people will think that Islam is not fair to non-Muslims, even when it involves the mother of a child,” he said.
Speaking of the conversion of his grandchildren, which Izwan achieved with the cooperation of the Pusat Dakwah Islamiah Negeri Sembilan, Sofi said it was an instance of a trend that the government should prohibit.
Otherwise, he said, non-Muslims would continue to abuse the Syariah Court process to gain custody of children by first converting to Islam.
He said the Pusat Dakwah Islamiah, by endorsing the unilateral conversion of Deepa’s children, was practically teaching people how to misuse Islam to settle marital disputes.
“The message is simple. If you have problems with your spouse, just convert to Islam. Then convert your child without your spouse’s knowledge.
“Automatically, the parent who converts to Islam will get custody of the children (from the Syariah Court) even if the civil court awards it to the other parent,” he said.
Sofi said he had no issues with Izwan’s decision to convert to Islam.
“But he had no right to convert my grandchildren without Deepa’s consent. What bothers me most is that even the religious department has allowed this to happen.
“If this is the case, what happens to the right of Deepa, who is the mother of the children?”
