Ministry to look after welfare of Albukhary university students, staff

The Education Ministry has assured students, lecturers and staff of the Albukhary International University (AIU) that their welfare will be looked after if the full-scholarship university is closed down.
Second Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh (pic) said the ministry had received a letter from the university over its impending shutdown.
"Discussions are being held to identify the reasons why AIU had to cease operations," he told reporters in Putrajaya today.
He was commenting on reports that the Alor Star-based university, which was founded by the Albukhary Foundation, might close down in June due to internal problems.
Idris said the ministry was looking into the possibility of placing the students, lecturers and staff elsewhere.
AIU, a fully residential campus set up in 2010 as a waqaf (religious endowment), enrols needy students from all over the world.
The costs, including tuition fees, residence, food and books, are borne by the Albukhary Foundation which was founded by tycoon Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Albukhary in 1996. - Bernama
