Three months on, Mais still probing Bibles

Mkini
The Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) says the probe on the Bible Society of Malaysia (BSM) has yet to be concluded as the attorney-general had requested for more information.
“It is still under investigation, just wait. We have met the public prosecutor’s office and it is now up to them,” Mais chairperson Mohamad Adzib Mohd Isa was quoted as saying in an Utusan Malaysia report today.
Mais oversees the Selangor Islamic Affairs Departments (Jais) which had on Jan 2 raided the BSM in Damansara and confiscated over 300 Malay and Iban language Bibles which used the word ‘Allah’ in reference to god.
Jais had relied on the Selangor Non-Islamic Religions (Control of Propagation Among Muslims) Enactment 1988 which bans non-Muslim from using the word.
Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim has refused to intervene and order the Bibles release, insisting that the final word should come from the attorney-general.
His stance has earned him criticism for failing to protect the rights of minorities, including PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim who said the menteri besar had “not done enough” on the matter.
DAP’s Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo was more scathing in his criticism, questioning whether Abdul Khalid should remain as menteri besar.
On Tuesday, BSM announced that it will move its office to Kuala Lumpur, citing the Selangor government’s “lack of interest” in addressing an unjust situation.
Unlike mosts states, Kuala Lumpur has no Islamic enactments banning non-Muslim use of a number of words used by Muslims, including ‘Allah’.
Selangor’s enactment was passed in 1988 by the BN-led state government of the time.
They were similarly passed in state assemblies nationwide from 1986 (Terengganu) to 2007 (Negri Sembilan), except in Penang, Sabah and Sarawak.
