Uthayakumar fears for his life in Kajang Prison

Hindraf de facto leader P Uthayakumar says he fears for his life claiming there could be an attempt to harm him in  the Kajang Prison.

In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, Uthayakumar claimed that fellow prisoner Vijaya Kumar had confided that he was asked by a warden to "beat up and injure" him.

"As a Hindraf supporter, Vijaya Kumar said he could not do it and tipped me off as he feared another prisoner may do it," he said in the letter.

Uthayakumar said he hadcomplained about this to the prison authorities but Vijaya was subsequently transferred to a different block and given psychiatric treatment while he  was confined to  a dark room.

"I myself since April 16, (was) locked up for 14 days at the fully closed up (room) except (for) a small ventilation hole (in the) punishment cell - no reading and writing materials, towel and (having to) sleep on cement floor," he said.

Uthayakumar attributed his punishment and purported attempt to harm him to his constant complaints of alleged misconduct against prison wardens such as beatings and torture.

"Earlier on April 6, a prison officer warned me that I am taking a 'risk' (by) doing all these. Now I fear for the safety of my life in prison," he said.

The letter was disclosed by Uthayakumar's wife S Indra Devi at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.

She said the contents of the letter were revealed by Uthayakumar when Human Rights Party youth chief J Vasanthakumaran visited him at Kajang Prison last Thursday.

Indra, who lodged a police report on the matter at Jalan Travers police station this afternoon, said she would also fax the letter to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

"I urge the prime minister to look at this matter and treat Kumar (Uthayakyumar) as a political prisoner," she said.

Deputy Home Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar had October last year denied claims of mistreatment of Uthayakumar.

He was on June 5, 2013, sentenced to 30 months in prison under the Sedition Act 1948 by the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court for claiming ethnic cleansing against the Indian community.

His appeal against the sentencing at the Kuala Lumpur High Court was dismissed on Feb 18 this year and the case is now with the Court of Appeal.
