Exco frowns on workers sleeping at JB Sentral

A Johor leader has said it was unbecoming of certain individuals to treat JB Sentral as their bedroom as such attitude would tarnish the image of the tourism industry.

Johor tourism, trade and consumerism exco Tee Siew Kiong (left) was responding to reporters about a front page report in an English language newspaper three days ago.

The news report pertained to some individuals believed to be working as cleaners and factory workers in neighbouring Singapore, who would sleep at the land transport hub and set off early next morning to work.

Incidentally, visitors travel through Tambak Johor and enter JB Sentral, which is also close to shopping centres that have become a draw to both the local population and tourists.

According to the report, the individuals would sleep in the surau, public benches and on the floor at corners hidden from public view, and would just ignore the auxiliary police who expressed disapproval at their actions.

"They should cease working in the neighbouring country if it is cumbersome for them.

"Johor, in particular, Iskandar Malaysia is developing rapidly; there is abundant employment opportunities here now, and offering better wages than previously," said Lee after launching a Tenaga Nasional Berhad corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme at Kampung Parit Panjang yesterday.
