Jais ready to say sorry if khalwat raid wrong

The Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) is willing to apologise if it is found that it had wrongfully arrested three women and a man for alleged khalwat.

“Jais views this matter seriously and will not hesitate to take any action on officers found to breach guidelines under the Syariah Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment 2003…

“(Jais) is willing to issue an apology if it is found that the officers went beyond what is allowed in the law,” Jais director Ahmad Zaharin Mohd Saad said.

He said that an independent committee is investigating the officers involved in the raid.

He added that the probe on the suspects is now ongoing and that the case is only investigated on the basis of “suspicion” of khalwat.

'Refrain from commenting'

He said that the whether the suspects will be charged will be determined by public prosecutor after the investigation is completed.

“As such, we urge all quarters to refrain from making remark without referring to facts or Jais, as it will invite negative polemics towards Jais and the suspects,” he said in a statement late today.

The suspects, aged 20 and 29, were arrested for khalwat by two Jais officers just past midnight on June 22.

They claim they were shifting furniture into their newly-rented house in Salak Tinggi, Selangor.

The suspects claim that the man, who was helping the women move, were outside of the house when the Jais officers arrived.
