'Let due process take place in Rizalman case'

Let due process of the law take place in the case of Muhammad Rizalman Ismail, the diplomat accused of sexual assault in New Zealand, the Malaysian government has urged.

Deputy Defence Minister Abdul Rahim Bakri is quoted by New Straits Times today as saying that Rizalman remains a Warrant Officer 2, as the 38-year-old military attache "is innocent until proven otherwise".

Rahim (left) said: "There are on-going discussions between the Attorney-General's Chambers here and the New Zealand Attorney-General about the case.

"As promised, Rizalman will be sent back and we should let due process to take place."

Rahim said this at a joint press conference with Armed Forces chief Gen Zulkifeli Mohd Zin, who also promised that the wanted diplomat would soon be extradited.

Zulkifeli said that the officer was still getting psychiatric treatment at a hospital.

Rizalman was detained in Wellington, New Zealand, on May 9 and brought to court the next day for attempted burglary and sexual assault on a 21-year old woman.

He returned to Malaysia on May 22, after some diplomatic wrangling, and the matter came to public attention in New Zealand more than a month later - on June 28 - sparking outrage and a diplomatic tiff.

Wisma Putra has promised to send Rizalman back to Wellington face trial and the Defence Ministry has also backed the move.
