Malaysians can visit Kazakhstan visa-free

Kazakhstan is abolishing visa requirements for citizens of 10 countries including Malaysia for one year starting July 15.

Malaysian ambassador to Kazakhstan, Hidayat Abdul Hamid said the visa-free travel regime would also apply to citizens of the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, the United Arab Emirates, Netherlands, Republic of Korea and Japan.

Hidayat said these were the countries that had either invested the most in Kazakhstan or had potential investments planned that were the most considerable.

"The purpose of this visa-free regime is not only facilitate businessmen and investors but also encourage more tourists from the countries concerned to visit Kazakhstan.

"We are proud that Malaysia has been given this facility, Malaysian businessmen and citizens should take full advantage of it," he told Malaysian media covering '"Astana Day", the celebration of the establishment of Astana as Kazakhstan's national capital in Astana today.

According to the Embassy of Kazakhstan in Malaysia's website, the 10 countries are exempt from visa requirements for visits up to 15 calendar days from the moment of crossing the state border between July 15, 2014 to July 15, 2015.

"Should the citizens of these countries want to remain on the territory of Kazakhstan for more than 15 calendar days due to the business requirements of the negotiations or contracting the potential partner, they must submit an application for 'business' visa to migration police," the website stated.

The business visa is valid for a period of up to 30 calendar days with simultaneous extension of alien registration.

During their stay in the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan, citizens of these countries may not engage in missionary work, as well as other paid activities in accordance with the laws of the country, according to the website.

Until recently, Malaysians wishing to visit Kazakhstan have had to comply with a lengthy list of visa application requirements, including payment of US$25 (RM79) for a single-entry tourist visa and US$60 (RM190) for single-entry work, study or business visas.
