PAS says won’t stake claim for Selangor MB post

PAS today confirmed that the party will not stake a claim for the position of Selangor Menteri Besar if Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim is replaced.
Its secretary general Datuk Mustafa Ali (pic) said this was the consensus of the party leadership.
“For now the position belongs to PKR. We will not claim it,” he told The Malaysian Insider today.
He was commenting on The Malaysian Insider's report today that PAS had agreed to replace Khalid.
It is understood that PKR leaders will meet tonight to discuss Khalid's position as menteri besar.
Meanwhile, PKR secretary-general Datuk Saifudin Nasution Ismail said the party's leadership council will meet tonight to discuss Khalid's position as menteri besar.
He welcomed PAS's decision not to lay claim to the MB post, saying it was in the interest of Pakatan Rakyat and would console the grassroots.
"We hope the PKR leadership follow up this big responsibility with wisdom in arriving at a decision," Saifudin told The Malaysian Insider.
He said the leadership council had met on January 14 to discuss the matter, and left it to party de-facto leader to oversee discussions on the matter and give suggestions.
"Datuk Seri Anwar has brought this matter to the political bureau and the final decision will be made today," said Saifuddin.
The Malaysian Insider today quoted sources as saying that PAS had agreed to Khalid's removal.
A senior PAS leader said the Islamist party had also agreed not to stake a claim to the post for itself although PAS and DAP each hold 15 seats in the state assembly against PKR's 14
Khalid has had to consistently fend off rumours of him relinquishing his post, insisting that he wants to serve out his full term.
A recent survey by Merdeka Center found that Selangor electorate was happy with his stewardship of the state.
The survey which was conducted from May 16 to July 6 found that 54% of the 6,436 respondents agreed that the state was on the right track, as opposed to 25% who felt otherwise.
