DAP party mouthpiece Roketkini today apologised for using the slang term 'awek cun' in an article on new DAP member Young Syefura Othman.
Instead, the online Bahasa Malaysia publication swapped the term with 'wanita muda' (young woman) in its lead paragraph.
The slang 'awek cun' is equivalent to the sland 'hot chick'.
“As that the slang term ‘awek cun’ used before has caused unease among several quarters, Roketkini has made changes at relevant sections of thearticle.
“We apologise for the mistake of using a term which has caused unease,” a correction at the end of the article reads.
Roketkini yesterday started its article on Young Syefura, 25, by boasting that the “population of ‘awek cun’ in DAP is on the rise”.
“As the (Malay) saying goes, you can’t love if you don’t know. After long being smeared as a chauvinist party, the presence of these awek-awek cun suddenly melts away the negative perception,” the article further reads.
The second reference to ‘awek cun’ has not been removed from the article.
DAP had previously been admonished by women's group Empower for "packaging" its Teluk Intan by-election candidate Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud by her looks.
When contacted, Roketkini editor Al Mustaqeem M Radhi said it was an editorial decision following negative feedback from netizens.
He added that the word "awek cun" is not integral to the story content, so the decision to remove it does not significantly affect the story.
Asked if it was an instruction from DAP leadership, he said: "No, no."
