Sedition probe of Rafizi on Bank Rakyat letter

PKR's Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli was today hit with the third sedition investigation against him in less than five months.

This time, it is for releasing a letter from a minister to Bank Rakyat, which purportedly demands preferential treatment for a well-connected businessman.

Contacted this afternoon, Rafizi told Malaysiakini that he was questioned for two hours, from 11am, at the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters.

"After I revealed the minister's letter to Bank Rakyat, a police report was lodged against me by an NGO in Petaling Jaya alleging that it was seditious.

"So the police started the investigation," he said.

Rafizi said he was not old which NGO lodged the police report against him.

Last Wesnesday, Rafizi, who is the founder of the National Oversight and Whistleblowers (NOW) Centre, released to the mass media a letter purportedly from Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Hasan Malek (right) to Bank Rakyat.

Letter linked to Deepak Jaikishan's bank loan

The letter calls on Bank Rakyat to postpone any legal action against businessperson Deepak Jaikishan and for Deepak's debt of RM32 million with the bank to be settled through a monthly payment of RM270,000 over a maximum of 10 years.

Rafizi said the line of questioning by the police appeared to be geared towards finding out the source that leaked several letters related to the matter to him.

"Many of the questions were about how I got the documents. I think they just want to find out who leaked them," said Rafizi, who added he did not answer most of the questions.

The latest probe is Rafizi's third sedition case. In May, he was investigated for sedition over a book he authored entitled Reformasi 2.0: Fakta kes Anwar Ibrahim.

In March, he was also investigated  for sedition over remarks he made against right wing groups that had threatened to protest outside churches against the Christian community's use of the word "Allah" to refer to God.
