Time bomb is ticking in Sabah, warns Jeffrey

The presence of  hundreds of thousands of foreigners, if not more, with blue identity cards and MyKad, who are now employed in all levels of government, and in law enforcement agencies as well, has been described as a “dangerous, ticking time bomb”.

The issuance of the dubious ICs and MyKad to these foreigners, State Reform Party (Star Sabah) chairperson Jeffrey Kitingan (right) said, was very worrying since this has “conclusively been proven in the hearings of the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI)” into illegal immigrants in Sabah.

“These have further been proven, beyond any reasonable doubt, with the arrests of fake Sabah ICs held by security guards, taxi drivers and now, by suspected militants in the peninsula as well.

“The recent arrest of two suspected militants, said to be from Kampung Titingan in Tawau, Sabah (and despite the denial by the village headman), and the arrests of naval and security personnel suspected of terrorist links are just the tip of the iceberg,” Jeffrey said.

'Problems caused by Putrajaya's own actions'

Responding to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s announcement of the restructuring of the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom), Jeffrey added: “The current security threats, kidnappings and cross-border incursions are caused by the federal government’s own policies and actions by aiding and arming Muslim rebels in the southern Philippines and by wrongfully issuing Malaysian identity cards to illegal immigrants for political purposes.”

Najib in announcing the restructuring of Esscom on Tuesday said Esscom would have two main components - security and defence management, and enforcement and public action.

Welcoming the restructuring of Esscom, Jeffrey said: “The revamp to improve the security of Sabah in the face of mounting public criticisms of Esscom’s failures amidst repeated kidnappings and cross-border incursions is good, but not good enough.

“The chain of command under the revamp is still not clear. If the police are now in the lead, does that mean that the Esscom post of director-general is now redundant?

“Who is going to be ultimately responsible and answerable for Sabah’s security? And what will be the Sabah chief minister’s role and responsibilities as chairperson of the Sabah state security?”

'Security threats not just from outside'

Najib must remember, Jeffrey added, that the threats to the security of Sabah, and the country as well, lay within Sabah state as well, and not just outside.

Therefore, he asked, how would the federal government tackle and deal with these potential dangers without getting the RCI Report and its proposed recommendations implemented.

“It is high time for the federal government to be more transparent in its plans to tackle the security problems and illegal immigrant issues in Sabah and not treat them as minor problems or as public relations exercises.

“Time is running out fast as the clock on the time bomb continues to tick away in Sabah,” Jeffrey warned.
