Umno, DAP make peace over Ramadan tiff

Kluang Umno Youth chief Khairul Anwar Rahmat has extended an olive branch to DAP's Kluang MP Liew Chin Tong after the later was last week unceremoniously chased out of a Ramadan bazaar by Umno members.

In a gesture of gentlemanly politics, Khairul Anwar yesterday invited Liew (right) back to the Ramadan bazaar in Kluang to make up for the earlier incident.

"After the incident where Pakatan Rakyat elected representatives were prevented from giving out dates at the Ramadan bazaar in Kluang, the Kluang Umno Youth chief invited us to attend the bazaar.

"We brought dates while Umno Youth brought porridge. He conceded that a Ramadan bazaar is a public place like a market and no one should be prevented from coming.

"Congratulations to Khairul Anwar for being matured and open," said Kluang PAS chief Khairul Faizi Ahmad Kamil in a Facebook posting earlier today.

This posting was also shared by Liew on his Facebook page.

Last Monday, Liew's entourage, which arrived with dates to give out, were asked to leave by bazaar workers, some of whom sported jackets with the Umno logo on it.

One of the workers had insisted the entourage needed a letter to be at the bazaar and after almost five minutes of fruitless negotiations, Liew's group relented and left.

When contacted, DAP's Mengkibol assemblyperson Tan Hong Pin (left), who was part of the entourage, said Khairul Anwar had personally contacted them on Friday to apologise for the incident and extended the invitation to visit the bazaar together.

Tan, Liew and Khairul Faizi were finally able to make it to the bazaar together with their Umno counterparts yesterday.

In letter dated today, Kluang mayor Adib Azhari Daud said it had never appointed any workers for the bazaar.

"The Kluang Municipal Council would also like to inform the that of the Kluang Ramadan bazaar is not private property where people can be chased away from shopping," read the letter.

The letter was in response to a query put in by Tan following the June 30 incident.
