Anwar disagrees with personal attacks against Khalid

PKR CONGRESS PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim said today he does not agree with personal attacks against Abdul Khalid Ibrahim in the party's efforts to remove him as Selangor menteri besar.

Anwar told delegates in closing the PKR congress today to exercise restraint when explaining to the people PKR's reasons to remove Khalid as menteri besar.

He even called on the delegates to acknowledge Khalid's track record.

"His sincerity and his track record, we should acknowledge that. That is why Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail (PKR president) and I have been very careful not to attack his personality," Anwar added.

He said that it was "not easy" removing Khalid (left), as he considered him "friend and family".

"I held his hand before and told him- please listen (to the party's complaints)," Anwar said.

Smooth transition

Anwar said that he is still "hoping" for Khalid to agree to a smooth transition of power, following the latter's refusal to step down which has ultimately led to his sacking from the party.

He added he did not agree with the election system that was employed for the party elections, which was fraught with problems.

"This is a weakness on the part of everyone in the leadership, I admit. I did not agree with it, but the other leaders felt this was the right way to move forward," he said.

"There is need to overhaul this so that it remains democratic but at the same time manageable," he added.

The federal opposition leader, in his 40-minute long speech, also flayed some party members for being overzealous during party elections.

"During party elections, they go to every nook and crook and meet all the branch members. But during elections, I did not see them fighting with the same zeal," he sniped.

"This is a party that gives chances to young people, it doesn't mean you can break the rules, don't misuse the space we give you," he reprimanded, without being specific.
