AZIZAH most preferred MB of Selangor: Merdeka poll shows up PAS' folly, dashes Azmin's hopes

KUALA LUMPUR - As Pakatan Rakyat insiders have anticipated, PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail is the most preferred candidate to become the next 'Menteri Besar' or chief minister of Selangor.

Their expectations were confirmed by a just-released survey undertaken by independent pollster Merdeka Center.

In the Merdeka poll of 808 voters from Selangor, 25 percent of respondents said they wanted Wan Azizah as menteri besar.

The survey also showed that the Selangor mentri besar crisis has not alienated the Pakatan's core support in the state, with 57 percent of voters saying they would back the pact in a snap election.

But the crisis has shaken Selangor voters’ faith in where the state is headed under the pact, with just 46 per cent of respondents now saying it was going the right way, a slide from 64 per cent in March.

“A survey among voters across Selangor found that a majority of voters continue to support Pakatan Rakyat despite the protracted leadership crisis gripping the state’s mentri besar position,” Merdeka Center said in a statement accompanying the survey.

PAS, Azmin need to do some soul-searching

Interestingly, the 'alternative candidate' proposed by PAS - PKR deputy president Azmin Ali - fared the worst with respondents.

Azmin only managed to catch only six percent of support - the lowest - to be the state's chief executive.

Based on the survey, it appears that Selangorians would prefer even an Umno or PAS candidate for the chief minister's post rather than Azmin, who has been accused of being pro-Umno and anti-Chinese.

The Merdeka poll showed that 15 percent of respondents preferred a menteri besar from Umno versus 12 percent support for a PAS candidate. - Malaysia Chronicle
