Borneo activist to petition UN on Malaysia plan

Activists terming themselves “Borneo nationalists” are petitioning the United Nations to review the legality of the British’s move to transfer Sabah and Sarawak to Malaya in 1963.

This is part of an ongoing movement to question the Malaysia Plan and to consider secession of Sabah and Sarawak, which the activists argue have suffered after Malaysia was formed.

Sarawak Association of Peoples’ Aspriration (Sapa) said that UN petition, signed by 200 from Brunei, Sabah and Sarawak in Miri on Aug 9, is the petition is a precursor to a legal suit against the British government.

“The other approach is legal, with the intention to sue the British government for breach of trusteeship obligations in denying independence unconditionally to Sarawak and Sabah.

“This approach is ongoing with fund-raising appeal to gather sufficient funds to commence legal proceedings in the British court,” Sapa president Lina Soo said in statement.

The petition to the UN is a revival of a petition made 52 years ago opposing the Malaysia plan, which was granted a hearing by the UN. It was however, aborted due to the Brunei Revolt in Dec 8, 1962.

300,000 signatures sought

Soo said that the group is seeking 300,000 signatures to present to the UN and collect RM1 million for the legal suit.

She also argued that the Malaysia Agreement 1963 was “invalid” as both Sabah and Sarawak were “colonies” at the time, breaching international law of treaties.

She said that she is optimistic that the goals can be reached, following the “enthusiastic” presence at the Miri conference where the first signatures were collected.

The seemingly growing movement to review the Malaysia Agreement has been deemed as “seditious” by BN leaders.

This includes Sabah BN secretary and cabinet minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan who called for action against those calling for secession.
