DAP's Teng throws cold water on party critics

DAP’s Teng Chang Khim today hit out at his party colleagues for taking issue with his presence at the signing of the water industry head of agreement between the Selangor government and Putrajaya last week.

Teng (below), who is state executive councillor in charge of local government, studies and research, said that such criticism actually shows “immaturity”.

"I think that demonstrates their immaturity in politics. They are unable to differentiate politics and administration, I feel sorry for them." he told Malaysiakini.

He was responding to criticism against him by Kinrara state assemblyperson Ng Sze Han and Selangor DAP publicity chief Ronnie Liu for backing a deal not endorsed by Pakatan Rakyat.

Ng today took to Facebook to criticise Teng for being present with Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim when he signed the agreement, stating that it was disrespectful of the party.

"I am disappointed with the presence of my colleague to the water restructuring signing ceremony... I regret his actions which does not respect the party's stance.

"Has he forgotten his responsibility to the party?" said Ng.

Meanwhile, Liu in a statement questioned whether Teng was mindful of the contents of the agreement and the consequences of it.

'Respect leaders'

However, Teng said he is part of the DAP central leadership and his critics should respect that.

"I'm part of the CEC (central executive committee), Ng Sze Han is not, so I am part of the decision-making team.

"He has not attained that status, he should not be making statements without understanding," he said.

Ng (right) is a first-term assemblyperson and Selangor DAP treasurer.

Teng, nevertheless declined to comment when asked if he had consulted the party on the water deal prior to the signing of the agreement, so as to not “create more issues”.

Asked if the state government will be disclosing the details of the heads of agreement to the public, Teng said the matter has yet to be discussed.

"To us, it is no secret. All the terms are already decided in the last exco before," he said, referring to Pakatan’s first term helming Selangor from 2008 to 2013.

Abdul Khalid on Aug 1 signed the agreement with Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Maximus Johnity Ongkili in Putrajaya on Friday in the present of some of his exco members and several federal ministers.

The agreement is part of a prolonged and ongoing effort for the Selangor government to take over the water industry in the state.

It also part of the the federal government's effort to push through the multi-billion ringgit Langat 2 water treatment plant project.
