Former Perak menteri besar Mohd Nizar Jamaluddin claimed trial at the Ipoh Sessions Court today to a charge of criminally defaming Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak in 2012.
He was charged under the rarely-used Section 500 of the Penal Code for criminal defamation.
It was reported on Saturday that Nizar is scheduled to be charged today.
If found guilty, the former Perak MB and Changkat Jering assemblyperson stands to face a maximum two years’ jail, a fine or both.
Nizar was charged before Sessions judge Madihah Harullah.
The court also fixed bail at RM4,000 with one surety, and fixed Sept 26 for mention.
Nizar is charged with criminally defaming Najib during a public speech at Taman Desa Pakatan, Ipoh between 9pm to midnight on April 23, 2012.
The complainant in the case is one major-general.
Perak state head of prosecution Masri Mohd Daud prosecuted.
Nizar is represented by Hatim Musa and Fitri Asmuni.
