Fans of ISIS FB page should be hauled up, too

YOURSAY ‘The 17-year-old student is not advocating that Israel invade Malaysia.’

Schoolboy probed for 'liking' pro-Israel page

Adsertor: What would a 17-year-old boy know of the political sensitivity involving Israel in Malaysia?

He is probably like most boys who dreamed of a career in the military and admired (in his ignorance) the professionalism and successes of the Israeli army.

The teachers who victimised him should be punished for bullying and for failing in educating the boy which were their paid responsibility.

David Dass: Why investigate the boy for sedition? Where is the law prohibiting Malaysians from showing support for Israel?

There are debates taking place throughout the world for and against Israel and I am unaware of any country prohibiting a boy from indicating his support for Israel.

Given the emotions the Israel invasion of Gaza is generating here, it would be foolish for anyone to take a public position supporting Israel.

For the record (and for my personal safety), I should state that I condemn in the strongest possible terms the Israeli bombardment of Gaza.

The reaction of the teacher in uploading the screenshot showing the schoolboy’s 'like' of Israel on Facebook is shocking. This teacher, and the teacher who said that the boy should burn, must be hauled up and reprimanded.

Gerard Lourdesamy: Indeed, how is this seditious? The Form Five student is not advocating that Israel invade Malaysia to topple our rulers or government. Neither is he inciting hatred among the different races or religions in the country.

He merely clicked ‘Like’ on the Facebook page in private. It was not a public display of support for Israel for it to become a law-and-order issue. Every Malaysian has the right to freedom of expression provided it does not offend laws on public order, safety or morality.

There is no requirement in law that such freedom is subject to our government's policy of non-recognition of Israel and unqualified support for the Palestinians.

Not all Malaysians hate Israel or the Jews and not all Malaysians support Hamas. So what is wrong to take a different position from the majority who want to support the Palestinians and Hamas. How is that an offence?

Anonymous#007: This is nothing short of harassment. If this schoolboy can be charged, then PM Najib Razak can also be charged for his verbal support of a criminal organisation like ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria), which members are nothing more than thieves, plunderers and murderers.

And we know Malaysians do not condone such acts, much less an organisation that actively promotes them.

Ferdtan: We call upon all parents to get their kindergarten children off Facebook otherwise they may be arrested for mistakenly ticking ‘Like’ on supposedly seditious pages.

Now we know what the police have been doing - spending time reading Facebook sites, even teenagers’, instead of catching criminals. Our institutions have gone mad.

And that is not the most disgusting about this episode, some may be stupidly mad, but our chosen country’s leaders? Not a nay from them?

Negarawan: The student has the right to sue the school and police for wrongful action. Why is his action of clicking on ‘Like’ on a pro-Israel website seditious? What if he clicked ‘Like’ on a pro-Hamas website?

Using the same twisted logic, all Malaysians using Facebook are also committing sedition as Facebook is founded by a Jew. If extremism is allowed to continue like this in Malaysia, the progress we have made will be demolished in no time.

Dr Suresh Kumar: How about investigating the teacher who insinuated that the boy should be 'bakar' (set on fire)?

Other teachers have urged all the staff and students to boycott this boy on their FB. This boy has not attended school since Aug 10 apparently fearing for his life.

Is this the way a young, naïve student should be treated by teachers who suppose to inculcate noble values in their students? What kind of teachers are we breeding these days? Shame on all of you.

Swipenter: Is the PDRM (Royal Malaysian Police) saying that we must not like what the Umno Baru government dislike?

Those teachers and students should be the ones investigated and charged for criminal intimidation and inciting violence and not the student who ‘liked’ the pro-Israel Facebook page.

This country is descending to madness and chaos quicker than we thought possible.

Ratbatblue: The boy, even if he clicked ‘Like’ on purpose, should not be probed as it's his personal choice.

Is there a law in our Penal Code which states that it was an offence for anyone to passively (like this boy has done allegedly) support a regime which was not supported by the government in power?

If yes, then supporters of the ISIS must be hauled up, too.

MW: They are interpreting FB ‘likes’ literally. FB ‘like’ is just a way of getting updates from a page, does not in any way denote someone actually ‘like or support’ the contents.

I constantly have to 'like' many different pages on a variety of topics when doing my research.

TehTarik: Shocking. This is how fascism starts. I thought that this only happens in North Korea. I hope that good sense prevails among the powers-that-be.

The one who should be investigated is the teacher. I worry about the future of the non-Malays and liberal Malays, if such acts of fascism continues.

Doc: Oppps! I just accidentally clicked the wrong button on PM's FB page. I wanted to click ‘Like’ and accidentally clicked ‘Dislike’.

I am now sitting in fear waiting for a battalion of balaclava-clad Special Forces police and military men, armed to the teeth, to kick down my door and drag me off to a maximum security prison on a sedition charge for my heinous crime against the state. -Mkini
