Umno supreme council member Mohd Puad Zarkashi said if PAS decides to make a U-turn in supporting PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as Selangor menteri besar, it is a clear sign that the Islamic party does not respect the views of its religious scholars.
Puad, in increasing its attack on Umno’s main rival, said if there is a reversal, then PAS syura council which made its decision last week to support embattled Selangor MB Khalid Ibrahim could “close shop as it is considered irrelevant”.
“If the PAS central committee meeting is in favour of Wan Azizah, it shows that the clerics’ voices in the party are not respected. It will also show the influence of the PAS clerics is on the decline and their views no longer represent the party’s stand,” he told Umno Online.
“If this happens the slogan ‘PAS under the ulama (cleric) leadership’ is gone and this would undermine the party’s struggle for Islam.”
Puad said it is not impossible for this happen as many senior PAS leaders are close to Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim.
Hence, he added it is possible that tomorrow’s meeting would favour Wan Azizah as many senior PAS leaders whom he termed as ‘Anwariyun’ may dictate their views and if this happens it would certainly affect PAS.
Puad said that many support PAS for its policy of being with the clerics and if this is not respected by the PAS leadership, the Islamic party would be seen as more liberal and open compared to what it is today.
“That is why I say the PAS central committee meeting would not only determine the party’s direction in the Selangor administration but would be a signal of whether the syura council is relevant or not in the party,” he said.
