Khalid failed to make S'gor model state, says MP

Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim must go, because he has failed in his administration to make Selangor a "model Pakatan state" for the nation, said Selayang MP William Leong

“We had wanted Selangor to be a model state for us to show to the rest of the country what Pakatan Rakyat has to offer to the electorate, but this has not been done,” he said at a press conference this morning.

The press conference was held after the Selayang PKR division committee held an emergency meeting last night, where it was decided unanimously to call for Khalid to step down to make way for PKR president Wan Azizah Wan Ismail to replace him.

The committee - in which Leong is the chairperson - said Khalid has been reminded repeatedly that he is responsible for implementing Pakatan Rakyat’s manifesto, but Khalid did not heed these reminders.

Instead, Khalid had said that the manifesto is not legally binding, and as an example had approved seven tolled highways in the state, which the committee said is in violation of the Pakatan manifesto’s promise to abolish tolled highways.

In addition, they said, the Auditor-General’s Report 2011 has found that Selangor used only RM218.51 million out of RM375.90 million that the federal government allocated that year for Selangor’s road maintenance, leaving the Selangor roads in a state of disrepair.

This, along with the increased premiums for land alienation, quit rent, and others, is against the party’s call on Khalid to prioritise the provision of services for the people rather than bolstering state coffers, the committee said.

'Not listening to party'

The committee also took Khalid to task for failing to consult PKR and its allies before major decisions such as the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the federal government on Selangor’s water infrastructure.

Khalid had also ignored instructions from PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim, the committee said.

These instructions and directions had originated from the party’s supreme council and political bureau, and had asked Anwar to relay the message.

“But he had chosen to ignore them, not realising that he was not disobeying Anwar Ibrahim, the individual, but that he was disobeying the party and the leader of the party,” the committee said in a statement.

The committee urged Khalid to respect the Westminster parliamentary system where posts such as prime minister and menteri besar are appointed by the party.

“It is the hope of the Selayang division that Khalid Ibrahim demonstrates the wisdom and graciousness to accept the party’s decision so as to maintain his dignity, reputation, and self-respect.

Otherwise the party would have to take disciplinary action to sack him and to table a motion of no confidence against him in the state assembly,” the group said.
