MTEM: What does McD’s do with 94pct of revenue?

Targeted by protestors for alleged Israel links, McDonald’s Malaysia is now pressured by a prominent Malay group to reveal what they do with 94 percent of its revenue.

The Malay Economic Action Council (MTEM) CEO Nizam Mashar said that this is as estimations show that only 6 percent of the fast food chain’s sales go into its frontline staff’s salaries.

Nizam also condemned McDonald’s for allegedly using its Malay staff as "human shields" by decrying that 85 percent of its 12,000 employees are Malay.

Nizam based his estimation on reports that McDonald’s RM1.8 billion in sales this year, and McDonald’s employees are paid RM5 per hour.

He estimates that each frontline employee works an average 150 hours a month.

"This is yet another reason to boycott the fast food chain, for it is clearly hypocritical stance on statements “supporting its workers...

“McDonald’s boasted that a majority of their staff are Malays, yet they are keeping mum on the actual statistics,” he said.

He was responding to McDonald's Malaysia managing director's managing director Stephen Chew's plea that the chain not be targetted in pro-Gaza protests.

“If this multinational franchise wishes to offer the view that it cares for its staff, it should put its money where its mouth is,” said Nizam.

However, he also added that those who boycotted McDonald’s should actually offer better paying jobs to the staff, or offer the franchise owners viable alternatives as part of their actions instead of being violent.

“We believe, though, that it is up to the corporations to win back the trust of the public while refraining from using its staff as a public relations human shield,” he said.
