Coming to the defence of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak against Tun Dr Mahathir Mohomad’s criticisms, Umno mouthpiece Utusan Malaysia said that the sixth prime minister was facing a more challenging political landscape compared to his predecessors.
Awang Selamat, the collective voice of the paper’s editors, also reiterated party vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein's  statement that Najib's handling of the Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 crisis was an example of his administration's success.
"Najib is now leading the country in a political landscape that is far more challenging compared to the previous eras," Awang Selamat wrote.
‎Awang Selamat wrote that Dr Mahathir's withdrawal of support was done at the wrong time, although he conceded that the former prime minister had a right to voice out his views.
"Thank God Najib was his usual self – patient, calm and made no knee-jerk reactions. The prime minister has proven to have a good record in handling criticism from leaders, including Dr Mahathir," Awang Selamat said.
On Monday, Dr Mahathir said he was withdrawing his support for Najib as his many criticisms had fallen on deaf ears.
“I have tried to give my views to him directly, which are also the views of many people who have met me," wrote Dr Mahathir on his popular blog, chedet.cc.
"This has not been effective so I have to criticise. I have no choice but to withdraw my support," he had said, adding that Najib was no better than his predecessor, Tun Abdullah Badawi.
Dr Mahathir had said that he had hoped that Najib had learnt lessons from his poor performance in the last general election but it appeared that he had not.
“Many policies, approaches and actions taken by the government under Najib have destroyed inter-racial ties, the economy and the country’s finances,” he added.
The country’s longest serving prime minister said if no one else wished to speak out against the administration, he would take it upon himself to criticise Najib, even if it meant opening himself up to abuse.
Awang Selamat said Malay society at the grassroots level did not want to witness any break up in Umno as this would only jeopardise them.
"Umno's message of support towards Najib in this issue is clear to all. Any overreaction will not help. Do not worsen the situation.
"Awang will continue to support Najib (just as how it was when Dr Mahathir was prime minister).," the paper wrote
Yesterday, Umno Information Chief Datuk Ahmad Maslan said Dr Mahathir should have criticised Najib behind closed doors, to avoid his complaints from being used by the opposition against Umno, ‎
Ahmad said although he respected Dr Mahathir, he felt that the latter should have been circumspect with his criticism of  Najib's leadership.
"Please bear in mind that the situation and circumstances during Mahathir's times are different from Najib, both economically and politically," he said during a speech at the Seputeh Umno meeting yesterday.
Ahmad, who is also the deputy minister of finance, said he would prefer if Dr Mahathir had met with Najib face-to-face and talked it over, instead of using social media to convey his grouses.
"I have high respect for him (Dr Mahathir) as a former Umno top leader, but it would have been better if it was done discreetly," he said adding that nonetheless, Umno appreciated the former prime minister's comments and considered it as constructive criticism.
"Now, let's give the PM time to think about it," he said.
