Najib: I didn't promise a cent to Ukraine rebels

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak said he did not promise a single cent to the separatist forces in Ukraine in return for the remains of those who perished in the MH17 incident.

"My intention was to return the bodies of the victims to their families and I made no promises to the rebel leader, including paying them a single cent.

"Since the action was done with sincerity, they eventually agreed to return the bodies and the black box only to a Malaysian team.

"This is a help that we received from Allah," he was quoted as saying by Utusan Online.

Najib explained that his action stemmed from the government's policy, which prioritises the people.

He added the incident also proved that Malaysian can have ties not only with superpowers and developing nations, but also rebels as long as it is related to the security of citizens.

The prime minister raised this in his speech at the Majlis Perdana Ulama-Umara dan Anugerah Masjid Malaysia 2014 at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre.

While numerous quarters praised Najib for convincing the rebels, who until then appeared reluctant to budge, there were also those who questioned what was promised in return.

The MAS flight, which was en route to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam, was shot down over Ukranian airspace on July 17.

The plane was carrying 298 passengers and crew, including 43 Malaysians.
