NOT PIG DNA BUT BLUE PLASTIC BITS: Whittaker’s to recall chocolate shipment
KUALA LUMPUR - J.H. Whittaker & Sons Ltd, manufacturer of Whittaker’s chocolate from New Zealand announced today that it will be recalling a single batch of Almond Gold Mini Slabs 180g, following the discovery of pieces of blue plastic in the products distributed in New Zealand.
Its Head of International Markets, Matt Whittaker said the chocolates with the batch number L0944 and a best before date of Apr 4, 2015 will be recalled from the shelves.
He said the plastic has been identified as having come from a piece of equipment that was damaged during production of that one batch.
“Having completed an immediate investigation into the product that was returned to us, Whittaker’s acted immediately to identify and isolate the affected batch and to notify the relevant regulatory authorities in New Zealand and the two other countries, including Malaysia, that it has been distributed in.
“We believe we have narrowed down the exact timing of when the affected product was packed, but in line with our steadfast commitment to food quality and safety, Whittaker’s has chosen to voluntarily recall the entire batch produced that day.
“We apologise for any inconvenience or concern this causes our valued customers,” Whittaker said in a statement, today.
He added that the recalled batch of Almond Gold Mini Slabs is currently being removed from the marketplace.
There are 420 individual packets of Almond Gold Mini Slabs 180g from that batch in trade in Malaysia. So far, 166 of those packets have already been retrieved from trade/retailers, he added.
Whittaker said there have been no reports of harm but customers should not consume product from this specific batch.
He urged any customers that have Almond Gold Mini Slabs batch number L0944 with a best before date of Apr 4, 2015, which can be found on the back of the packaging, should return the product to Whittaker’s local distributor in Malaysia for a full refund. -NST
