Nurul: My mother capable of being MB

PKR CONGRESS Newly re-elected PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar is confident her mother, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who is also party president, will become Selangor menteri besar.

When her father Anwar Ibrahim was imprisoned for challenging then prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Nurul Izzah said, her mother persevered, going on to lead PKR (then PKN) and forming an opposition coalition.

"The hardest time was when father was imprisoned. There were six children for her to look after, and the youngest was only six years old.

"Imagine, my mother had to lead a political party and form the Barisan Alternatif and at the same time, send her children to school.

"Surely all this gave her the ability to empathise and now, the ability to empathise is the most important quality for me," Nurul Izzah told a press conference in Shah Alam after delivering her speech at the opening of the PKR Wanita congress this morning.

She was responding to a question on whether Wan Azizah can be better than current Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, who PKR wants to replace.

Nurul Izzah said Pakatan Rakyat was running short of time in the Selangor crisis and the immediate priority was to regain the confidence of the voters.

'A difference of opinion'

She was also asked about about the supposed reluctance on the part of coalition member PAS to endorse Wan Azizah as menteri besar due to her gender, but she brushed it off as a "difference of opinion".

However, she reiterated that Pakatan had last Sunday finally backed Wan Azizah as the candidate to replace the defiant Khalid.

"Differences of opinionn are normal in any organisation. What is important in thisn is that the highest decision-making body has already made a decision," Nurul Izzah said.

Despite Pakatan Rakyat finally endorsing Wan Azizah as the candidate for Selangor menteri besar last Sunday, Selangor PAS has openly declared that it did not think the Selangor palace will accept her.

However, the Islamic party has insisted that its reluctance to back Wan Azizah is not due to her gender. However, PAS has refused to elaborate on this.
