"The sultan has postponed the MB's request until a new MB is appointed. This is to ensure the state government runs smoothly," Khalid said at the state secretariat building today.
PR has submitted PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail's name to the palace although component party PAS has refused to endorse her.
But she has the support of 29 out of the 56 assemblymen in the state legislature to take the top job in the country's wealthiest state.
Khalid said today the Selangor Sultan wanted each party leader from within the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) coalition to submit at least three names.
"Because PR is not one group, but made up of three, each party leader must submit more than two names. (At least) three names from PAS, three names from DAP and three names from PKR," he said.
"This has been the palace's convention not just during PR's time, but even during Barisan Nasional's time."

This was confirmed in a statement from the sultan's private secretary, Datuk Mohamad Munir Bani, who said that this would allow the sultan to choose the most qualified candidate for the post.
Munir also said the sultan has complete discretion to decide on whom he believes commands the confidence of the majority of the assembly.
Khalid said the sultan did not disclose to him today when the deadline for PR to submit the names would be but said the ruler was expected to send a letter to each PR party informing them of the details, including the deadline.
He said DAP, which does not have any Malay Muslim Selangor assemblyman among its members, could propose any other candidate from the state assembly that fitted the criteria of a menteri besar candidate.
"In my experience previously, in my case, DAP nominated me and this was signed by a leader of DAP," said Khalid.
He added that the letter of support for Dr Wan Azizah, signed by 30 assemblymen, did not arise during his audience with the sultan.
"During the discussion, I merely handed my letter to Tuanku," said Khalid.
He also denied that the sultan had made the request following PAS's refusal to declare its support for Dr Wan Azizah yesterday.
"It was explained by Tuanku that even during the reign of his father, he also requested not more than four names," said Khalid.
