PAS to name Ijok rep as ‘compromise candidate’ in Selangor MB saga, says report

PAS leaders have recommended Ijok assemblyman Dr Idris Ahmad as the compromise candidate to break the deadlock over the Selangor menteri besar post, a Chinese daily reports.
Quoting a PKR source, Sin Chew said the party was expected to name the gynecologist as a compromise to put an end to the crisis which has threatened to split Pakatan Rakyat.
The daily said Khalid has no objection to Idris (pic) being made the MB, and the Selangor palace is not expected to object to Idris who contested the Ijok seat, which was previously held by Khalid before the 2013 national polls.
Idris, who runs his clinic in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, is seen as a non-controversial and respected PKR leader who entered politics during the reformasi movement.
Pas leaders also hope that the choice of Idris, who is from Selangor, will soften Khalid's hardline position to stay put.
Sin Chew said appointing Idris would also address misgivings among PAS's conservative elements about having a woman to helm the country’s richest state.
The report said PKR's concern was the possible objection from supporters of the party's deputy president, Azmin Ali.
On Saturday, The Malaysian Insider quoted a source as saying that efforts were being made to find an alternative to Dr Wan Azizah for the top post.
A PKR candidate has been identified, but he cannot be named until a consensus is reached between the parties in the coalition.
But the source told The Malaysian Insider that Azmin was rejected by the PAS leadership.
"The third candidate should be a PKR assemblyman, a faithful follower of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and one who is accepted by MB Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim," the source said, adding that a good track record was also important.
The Selangor MB crisis has caused a rift in the Pakatan coalition after PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang threw his support for Khalid.
PAS leaders will meet on August 10 to discuss whether or not the party would endorse Dr Wan Azizah.
The crisis reached a head when a screenshot of a discussion among PAS leaders in mobile messaging application WhatsApp was leaked, showing PAS member Dr Mohd Zuhdi Marzuki talking about the possibility of teaming up with rival Umno to form a simple majority government, while retaining Khalid as MB.
PAS itself is split on the issue of replacing Khalid with Dr Wan Azizah because of two reasons. While having a female to head the state government does not sit well with several leaders, her ability to make decisions was also questioned as she is the wife of PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Last week, DAP's Lim Guan Eng called on all political parties to declare their stand on whether a woman can be appointed as MB before they talked about changing the MB.
"Let us not be distracted by the proposal to change the menteri besar. The main issue that has to be addressed, as pointed out by Anwar Ibrahim, is the objection against a woman being appointed to the post," said Lim.
