Penang security men say Ong hit them first

Two members of Penang’s voluntary patrol unit (PPS) have lodged police reports against businessman Ong Eu Soon, to counter Ong’s claim that they assaulted him.

This come after the duo – Lee Yew Kuan, 66, and Lee Chan Kwong, 35, were picked up by police yesterday to assist in the probe involving Ong, who claimed he was physically assaulted by two PPS members at the Farlim market on Sunday night.

Countering the claim, Chan Kwong said that a stranger later identified as Ong (right) had approached him at the Farlim Market at 11pm and pushed him off his motorcycle causing bruises on his left arm.

"The man, who wore a blue t-shirt and black trousers was upset with me before he pushed me off the bike.

"A friend, Lee Yew Kuen came to my help, Ong had acted aggressively and hit my friend's head with a stick. There was blood on his head," Chan Kwong said.

"So I lodged a police report at the Jalan Patani police station about 11.35pm yesterday, because I fear for my life," he added.

Chan Kwong appeared at a press conference in Komtar called by Penang executive councillor on welfare and caring society Phee Boon Poh, with their lawyer and Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh today.

'Killing machine'

According to a police report lodged by Jaafar Shadik Mohd Shariff @ Muthi, 33, a manager with a fitness center in Air Itam, Ong had last March "caused trouble by threatening the management".

He said that Ong, who lived in the area, was unhappy with the noise coming from the centre.

"I lodged the police report to protect our staff at the fitness center and if anything happens to anyone of us, that man (Ong) will be held responsible," said Jaafar Shadik who was also at the press conference.

Ramkarpal said a police report will also been lodged over Ong's Facebook posting "which contained criminal intimidation in nature".

In the posting before the alleged assault, Ong had claimed to be a "killing machine" who wants "blood to flow in the market".

He also allegedly claimed he was kicked and punched by several PPS members.

Meanwhile, Phee urged the media and relevant parties to wait for the outcome of the police investigations instead of speculating on the matter to be fair to the PPS members.

Earlier, Parti Cinta Malaysia vice-president Huan Cheng Guan called for the PPS to be disbanded if the state government is unable to control the team.

Disagreeing, Phee said the PPS should instead be “expanded and its services offered to rural areas and every corner of the state".

He said that such incidents involving the PPS are very rare and the unit has been helpful in assisting local communities during festivals, weddings or funeral.

Ong is a vocal critic of the Penang government, often writing fiercely on issues of transportation, environment and most recently, the state proposed under seabed tunnel linking the island to Butterworth on the mainland.

Northeast police deputy chief Rahman Ahmad said the case is being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for voluntary causing hurt.
