PKR: PAS didn't mind 'forcing' sultan before

PKR has dismissed the argument put forth by PAS over the latter's decision to submit two names to the palace for the Selangor menteri besar's post.

Party secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution said after the last general election, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang had no qualms in submitting only one name.

"This was despite the sultan asking for four names," he toldMalaysiakini.

“This was a non-issue before and now it suddenly became an issue,” he said sarcastically.

PAS secretary-general Mustafa Ali (right) has argued that not submitting more than one name as requested by the sultan could be construed as "forcing" the palace.

He also clarified that the situation was different in the past because the issue was not out in the public domain as the current imbroglio.

Mustafa had reacted to de facto PKR leader Anwar Ibrahim asking PAS to stick by the Aug 17 Pakatan council decision to only propose PKR president Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

Saifuddin said the Pakatan leadership meeting held then, which top PAS leaders including its deputy president Mohamad Sabu had attended, had reached a consensus and agreed to nominate Wan Azizah as the sole candidate.

“We would like to ask PAS to respect Pakatan’s decision at the meeting which was attended by its key leaders,” he said.

Letter to sultan being drafted

PKR is still in the process of drafting the letter which will nominate only Wan Azizah, and probably will submit the nomination letter by next week, said Saifuddin.

The letter will need to be drafted in palace language, and will required to be perused by legal experts, before it is approved by party leaders, he said.

Meanwhile, newly-minted PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli said the letter will be drafted in a straightforward manner, stating that Wan Azizah commands the majority support of the state assembly.

When asked if the party will stress on gender, he said the party would not include the matter in the letter.

“Please be fair to the palace, (the gender and other issues) were just simply assumptions, the palace has not indicated anything at all,” he said.

Selangor DAP chief Tony Pua said PKR is helping the party to draw up the party’s letter.

“If the content is okay, then we will sign it and send it to the palace as soon as possible,” he said.
