Police still don’t know who is ‘Kelvin Yip’

Police have urged the public to come forward if they know ‘Kelvin Yip’, the young man under fire from Umno Youth and Malay rights NGOs for posting on his Facebook a profanity-laden complaint about loud prayers from a mosque.

Deputy inspector-general of police Mohd Bakri Zinin affirmed that Yip was being investigated but up to now, they do not know much about the young man. Police have also not ruled out that someone else, masquerading as Yip, may have made the posting on his Facebook page. Yip’s Facebook page has since been deleted and his account closed.

“We don’t know for sure if it is really Kelvin Yip of some other individuals using his name to make the provocations on Facebook,” Mohd Bakri was quoted as saying by Sinar Hariantoday.

He stressed that the case needs deeper investigation also as the individual involved had commented on a social network, not openly to the public.

Yip’s case had gained prominence after Umno Youth chief and Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin complained last week that it was not fair that the case of road rage perpetrator Siti Fairrah Ashykin Kamaruddin, or Kiki, was met with swift punishment while Yip appeared to go scot-free.

His subordinates then followed up on the notion, protesting that the attorney-general only selectively prosecuted some who make callous remarks about race and religion, not all.

Two days ago, Umno Youth gave the Attorney-General’s Chambers and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) an ultimatum to act against those who allegedly insulted Islam on social media.

Attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail has since answered the allegations, saying that it has acted on those who insulted Islam from time to time.
