'Selangor reserves may fund street demos for Anwar'

Selangor's massive RM3 billion reserves may be used to finance street protests in support of her Anwar Ibrahim if his wife and PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail becomes Selangor menteri besar, claims Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia.

"There have been many quarters, as reported, who are concerned that the reserves of the state will be used to rescue Anwar's political career, including funding a series of big street demonstrations if he is imprisoned for sodomy," it said in its Sunday edition Mingguan Malaysia today.

The Court of Appeal on March 7 overturned the  Kuala High Court's acquittal of Anwar of sodomising his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.

Anwar, who claims the charge is politically motivated, is appealing this judgment in the Federal Court.

Under its editorial pseudonym Awang Selamat, Utusanraised its theory about the state's reserve, as Anwar was determined to see his wife become Selangor menteri besar.

"It is as if no one else is qualified (to become menteri besar)," it said.

'PKR an Anwar family party'

The newspaper also mocked PKR as a family party, pointing out that Anwar was adviser, his wife the president, and his daughter Nurul Izzah is a vice-president.

PKR, which has found it difficult to work with embattled Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, is attempting to replace him with Wan Azizah.

The daily said it believed Khalid, who has been sacked from PKR for defying party instructions, will persevere in the crisis.

"He has in his hands secrets that have yet to be revealed, which will explode if the situation becomes desperate," the newspaper claimed.
