'Sodomy trial can be telecast if court allows'

Communication and Multimedia Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek has no qualms about live telecasting PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim’s sodomy appeal in the Federal Court.

However, Shabery said, based on previous applications, this is nearly impossible.

He said an application for a live telecast of the counting of votes during the last general election was also not allowed by the Election Commission (EC).

“There is no problem (for a live telecast of the sodomy appeal). But it is up to the court,” Shabery said in Putrajaya today.

“I don’t think that during the trial, the court will allow for it to be shown live,” he said, adding that there was no live telecast for a court trial before.

However, Shabery added that if the court orders a live telecast, RTM would have no problem to show the trial live.

The court has fixed Oct 28 and 29 to hear the opposition leader's appeal to set aside the conviction and sentence of his Sodomy II charge and the prosecution’s cross-appeal to enhance the sentence.

PKR deputy president Azmin Ali (leftsaid on Sunday that he wants a live telecast of Anwar's sodomy appeal in the Federal Court.

Azmin said only then could the rakyat evaluate the sodomy accusation against Anwar, which he claimed was politically-motivated.

Meanwhile, Shabery, who is also Kemaman MP, said the appeal for a live telecast was nothing more than a “personal agenda”.

He claimed that Anwar, when in ruling BN coalition, had never suggested that any trial or parliamentary sitting be shown live.

“When he was in the government, he had never suggested for that (live telecast for trials).

“He is just doing this for himself, it’s not about building a more open system. During his time, there was no live telecast of Parliament sittings. At least in my time, we have it,” Shabery added.
