Stop cheating the people, Sabah leaders told

The Borneo Heritage Foundation is surprised that Sabah Legislative Assembly Speaker Salleh Said Keruak is asking the authorities to take action against those who talk about Sabah’s secession from the Federation of Malaysia.

“As a Sabahan, Salleh should listen more and understand the voices of dissension and unhappiness,” BHF chairperson Jeffrey Kitingan said yesterday.

“He does not care about the concerns of Sabahans and the injustices they suffer as a result of the way Malaysia has turned out, and for Sabah to be downgraded as the 12th state taken over by Malaya.

“Salleh is not bothered that our resources and revenue that have been taken over by Kuala Lumpur in the name of the ‘federation’, or that our population has been unlawfully changed and restructured, our security compromise and oujr political franchise taken over by foreigners.

“Our political power is directly under Malaya/Umno. The Malaysia Agreement 1963 is ignored and all the promises, assurances by the founding fathers have been forgotten,” Jeffrey said when commenting on a statement made by Salleh.

“Look where we are today – we are colonised, compromised, the poorest, the underdeveloped. Where is the promise of Borneonisation? Where is the promise of ‘independence’ promised by Tunku Abdul Rahman?” he said.

Federal government 'suppressing the truth'

Jeffrey claimed that the federal government is suppressing the truth about the independence of Malaya and the formation of Malaysia.

“They are promoting untruths and want the people of Sabah and Sarawak to celebrate the independence of Malaya as on Aug 31, 1957.

“Why is Salleh helping to promote the untruth and the manipulation of history?” he said, pointing out that Sabahans are not wrong in celebrating Sabah’s Independence on Aug 31 and flying the Sabah flag.

Salleh should support Sabahans in celebrating Sabah's independence and addressing their grievances on the manipulation and distortion of history, instead of threatening peace-loving Sabahans and sweeping their grievances and unhappiness under the carpet, he said.
