IPOH - Shah Alam parliamentarian Khalid Samad has voiced his support for PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail to be the new Selangor menteri besar.
In yet another move which preempted a meeting on the Selangor leadership crisis by Pas today, Khalid Samad refuted accusations that Dr Wan Azizah was not qualified to helm the state.
The Pas central committee member also claimed Dr Wan Azizah was chosen by her virtue of the being the PKR president.
"I will support her by by virtue she is PKR president and not just because she is (PKR de facto chief Datuk Seri) Anwar Ibrahim's wife," he said.
Speaking to reporters after attending PKR's fund raising dinner here on Friday, Khalid however admitted the general public are not comfortable with Dr Wan Azizah's candidacy as she was Anwar's wife and this made party leadership to be uncomfortable.
"God willing, this matter will be brought up for discussion in our central committee meeting this Sunday (today)," he said.
It was reported that Pas had objected to Dr Wan Azizah's nomination as the Islamic party was sceptical of her leadership qualities.
Khalid reiterated that Pas would not put a candidate from its ranks for the menteri besar post.
"We respect the wishes of PKR and DAP that the menteri besar must be from PKR…it is something we had agreed upon since 2008 and there is no reason for us to change that," he said.
He added the question of dissolving the state assembly also did not arise as Pakatan holds the majority in the august House.
Khalid also expressed confidence that Pas would change its stand of not supporting Dr Wan Azizah when its central committee meets tomorrow.
"The question now is who will be the menteri besar candidate," he added. -NST
