Two PAS reps on board, Wan Azizah claims majority

PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail has majority in the Selangor state assembly to become the next menteri besar after two PAS state assemblypersons expressed their backing for her.

PAS' Morib rep Hasnul Baharuddin (left) and Hulu Kelang rep Saari Sungib were both present at the Empire Hotel in Subang where Wan Azizah held a press conference this afternoon.

Support from the two PAS reps would mean that Wan Azizah now has 30 state assemblypersons backing her in the 56-member assembly, following all PKR and DAP assemblypersons declaring their support earlier.

On the other hand, current independent Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim can only obtain 26 votes in the state assembly if the remaining PAS assemblypersons and Umno assemblypersons support him.

"With this, I announce that 30 Pakatan Rakyat assemblypersons, including myself, have lost faith in Khalid as menteri besar.

"They (the assemblypersons) have also expressed their support for me to take over as menteri besar," said Wan Azizah, who is also the Kajang assemblyperson.

The Pakatan-held state is embroiled in a crisis with Khalid refusing to resign.

Meanwhile, Wan Azizah has also made a second attempt to seek an audience with Selangor ruler Sharafuddin Idris Shah after the palace rejected her first bid.

The second letter was signed by Wan Azizah herself.

The first letter was signed by PKR de facto leader and her husband Anwar Ibrahim.

The letter was reportedly sent to the palace on Tuesday and did not specify the reasons behind seeking the audience except that she wanted to "provide an explanation".

Meanwhile, the palace has consented to Khalid continuing as menteri besar.
