Villagers protest new sand dredging

Kampung Litong people says they will not hesitate to take the law into their own hands over the resumption of dredging works.
sand-mining-300x202Mukah: The “stubborn attitude” of a contractor has forced the people of Kampung Litong here to stage protests against the resumption of sand dredging works by the mouth of the Mukah River.
Resident Zaidi Bujang, who is leading the protests, is inviting villagers to surround a barge that has begun dredging works by the mouth of the river.
Litong villager Jamahari Sahli, made a police report on the matter after discovering that sand dredging in the area had resumed in recent days.
“I invite residents to join in together to protest and surround a barge that is carrying out the work,” he said.
“When we visited the dredging area yesterday, workers there co-operated with us and immediately stopped the dredging work and told us that they were just doing their work.”
Zaidi warned that if the contractor continues the dredging works, they will not hesitate to take the law into their own hands.
“Do not force us. I hope the contractor can co-operate. We just want our village to be safe from erosion before it is lost to the sea,” he said.
