Zuraida: People 'will revolt' if election is called

PKR CONGRESS There is no need for a fresh Selangor state election to be called, for the people `will revolt' if it is held. And if it is held anyway, Umno will lose heavily, says PKR Wanita chief Zuraida Kamaruddin.

Zuraida, who is also Ampang MP, said there was no purpose to have state-wide elections as PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail already garners the majority support of at least 30 state assemblypersons.

“Why is there a need to dissolve the state assembly? The issue to dissolve is ridiculous. This will put Selangor people to shame and may anger them. If there is a state-wide election, Umno must be prepared to lose all its seats, 56-0,” she said.

“If state-wide elections are held, the citizens 'will revolt' and Umno will not get any seat in Selangor,”  Zuraida said in her winding-up speech at the party's Wanita wing congress in Shah Alam today.

Selangor has 56 state assembly seats, with Umno holding 12 of the seats. The rest were won by Pakatan Rakyat assemblypersons and there is now one Independent member, following Abdul Khalid Ibrahim's sacking from PKR.

'Don't listen to speculation on MB post'

Zuraida also urged the people in the state not to listen to speculation about Wan Azizah's nomination for the post of menteri besar.

There have been much speculation, she said, about the Selangor sultan seeking two names for the post of Selangor menteri besar.

If this happens, Zuraida said, it would not be a problem for PKR to submit a second name as it is not an issue.

Among the issues raised during the debate was the lack of members during the PKR Wanita congress at the division level.

Several delegates during debate supported the notion that women can become leaders.

Sarawak delegate Nurhanim Mokhsen said women now are not only a wing within the party but they are becoming the movers and competing equally with men.

“Wanita should not be isolated. Wanita should not hold the ancient thought that they are weak and belong only in the kitchen or only taking care of the children.

“Today, women are at par with men, as besides leading the family and society, they are also able to lead a state and become prime minister. God willing,” Nurhanim said.

Earlier, PKR vice president Nurul Izzah Anwar during the opening speech also criticised people who used religion to stonewall woman from attaining positions of leadership.

Her comments came amid PAS reluctance to accept Wan Azizah as the next Selangor Menteri Besar though the party has insisted that it is not because of her gender.
