I am nasty when necessary, says Dr Mahathir

The current federal government needs to be criticised if its policies do not benefit the country, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today.
Dr Mahathir said it was expected of an elected government to make changes in its policies and laws to show its contributions to the country but it should not be above criticism if it did something that did not benefit the nation.
"After I stepped down, policies changed and laws changed, that is expected. They want to show their own contribution to the country. But when they do something that is not contributing to the country, someone needs to tell them," he said in his opening address at the 6th Malaysian Construction Summit 2014 in Kuala Lumpur today.
"When necessary I will become nasty. That’s my reputation."
The country’s longest serving prime minister said at a press conference today that if no one else wished to speak out against the current administration, he would take it upon himself to criticise Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, even if it meant opening himself up to abuse.
“Leaders need to be criticised. Otherwise, they think everything they are doing is right and they will go on doing the wrong thing. During my time, I was not only criticised but also challenged.
“It took some strategies in order to remain in the seat.”
He added that in Malaysia, even those who supported the government should speak up as most people who criticised the government were pro-opposition.
“People who are supportive of the government need to tell the government whenever they go wrong. I thought since nobody dares or wants to stick out their neck, I would stick my neck out to be chopped.”
Dr Mahathir said he had not been making comments for some time but when private criticism was not working, he felt that it was time to go public.
Last month, he said he was withdrawing his support for Najib as his criticism had fallen on deaf ears.
“I have tried to give my views to him directly, which are also the views of many people who have met me," Dr Mahathir said in his blog at the time.
"I have no choice but to withdraw my support. This has not been effective so I have to criticise," he had said, adding that Najib was no better than his predecessor, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
Dr Mahathir said he had hoped Najib would learn lessons from his poor performance in the last general election but it appeared that he had not.
