Former information minister Tan Sri Zainuddin Maidin warned English daily The Star that Malays may boycott the newspaper because of its perceived anti-Malay and anti-Islam stance.
The former Umno politician said that the boycott of popular fast-food chain McDonald’s over its support for the Israeli invasion against Palestinians in Gaza was an indication that the buying power among the Malays was on the rise.
"This can also happen to Coca-Cola, to Chinese companies opposed to the GST (goods and services tax) and to The Star if it continues with its anti-Malay and anti-Islam stance by portraying Malays and Muslims as extremists and racists for upholding the sovereignty of the Constitution," he said in his blog zamkata.blogspot.com today.
"This is the face of The Star, which is hiding behind MCA and a few Malay personalities."

According to Zainuddin, among the Malay personalities used by the newspaper is the daughter of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, where most of her views and stand are not liked by Dr Mahathir himself," he said in reference to the former prime minister and his daughter Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir.
Zainuddin also took exception to the English daily's new campaign on moderation called "Brave Views, Bold Ideas", which he said painted newly formed people's movement Negara-ku as one that strives for national unity when it had been declared illegal by the Registrar of Societies.
