PAS leaders fear Pakatan collapse

The decision to submit a PAS nominee for the Selangor MB's post could lead to a split in the Islamist party as well.
selangor_pakatan_300PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Rakyat appears close to breaking up with PAS’s decision to include one of its own in the list of Menteri Besar candidates it has submitted to the Sultan of Selangor.
How will PKR and DAP react if the Sultan chooses the PAS candidate? This is the general question being asked by Pakatan members and supporters. And how will PAS form the state government without the support of PKR and DAP assemblymen? Would PAS form a “unity government” with Umno?
FMT has learnt that emotions are running high among the PAS top brass who were surprised to learn that the party had made the decision without consulting the Central Leadership Committee (CLC).
One enraged PAS leader said, “It’s as if we’re trying to get into trouble on purpose.
“The CLC has already agreed that the candidates for the Menteri Besar’s post must come from PKR.
“We know that if the issue of whether the party should remain in Pakatan were to be debated at the PAS Muktamar, the majority will support staying in the alliance. Now it looks like someone is purposely asking PKR and DAP to tell PAS to get out of Pakatan.
He said the issue could even cause a split in PAS itself.
“Naming a PAS candidate for the MB’s post without the CLC’s approval indicates that we are not only damaging the relationship among Pakatan components, but that we do not care about relationships within PAS as well.
“Indeed, we risk a PAS break-up too.”
Another PAS leader said he was aware that the latest development had upset many leaders at state and grassroots levels.
“There are strong objections within the party on the latest development. Many are unhappy, but we’ll see what we can do,” he said without elaborating.
