Police: We won’t meet state govt on PPS issue

CPO says police acted on legal, not political, grounds.
PPS Abdul Rahim Hanafi300GEORGE TOWN: Police have refused to consult with the Penang government to resolve the controversy over the Voluntary Patrol Squad (PPS).
“Our investigations will continue because PPS has operated illegally,” Penang police chief Abdul Rahim Hanafi told newsmen at state police headquarters here today.
Asked whether police would hold any discussion with the state government over the issue, he said, “The matter does not arise.”
He said the police were acting on legal, not political, grounds because PPS was an unregistered organisation. “We are handling the matter on legal grounds. We are not holding any discussions nor am I in a position to advise PPS to stop operations.”
He said police would continue to investigate PPS under Section 43 of the Societies Act even if it ceased operations because it had already committed an offence.
Referring to PPS chairman Phee Boon Poh’s allegation that he was treated like a criminal when he was detained at the Datuk Keramat police station, Abdul Rahim said it was Phee’s personal view.
He insisted that police gave Phee and others the best treatment according to the standard operating procedures applied to remand prisoners.
He said investigation papers on PPS would be submitted to the Deputy Public Prosecutor’s Office by tomorrow.
He confirmed that all detained PPS members had been released on police bail.
Abdul Rahim disclosed that four of the PPS members detained on Sunday were suspected to have committed drug-related offences and would be investigated under the under the Dangerous Drugs Act.
