Azmin MIMICS Jokowi, starts MB duties by jumping onto dump trucks, into drains
From drains to dump trucks, nothing is too menial for newly-minted Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali, or so says the publicity blitz positioning him as Malaysia’s Jokowi.
Smartphones ever ready, Azmin’s supporters have filled his social media timeline with evocative pictures of him not too much concern about his crisp short-sleeved white shirt getting dirty.
Climbing onto a dump truck yesterday morning, the picture is reminiscent of the dump site press conference held by the Indonesia’s president Joko Widodo, whose rise in politics is nothing less than meteoric.
“Terjah,” the MB replies, playfully using a pop culture term typically used when a celebrity is ambushed by paparazzi, to a tweet by supporter Haziq Abdul Aziz showing Azmin perching on the side of the truck.
“A dump truck without a license is busted by the MB,” Haziq, the president of PKR-linked student group Mahasiswa Keadilan, captions the picture.
As if dumpster diving is not enough, another photograph from his first “turun padang” exercise after being sworn in a week ago shows Azmin rounding up “illegal immigrants”.
“Terjah an illegal dump site and illegal migrant residence at Kampung Sungai Kertas, Batu Caves,” Azmin later captions a photo collage on his official Instagram account.
The collage shows Azmin, not a hair out of place, and an entourage walking into a makeshift structure believed to be housing illegal immigrants.
Youth appeal
Another photograph shows him in monsoon drain, while a crowd gathers to watch.
“Cayalah!” Instagram user mad_iban says. “Steady, YAB Azmin Ali,” another user, danialhamid79 enthuses.
Fifty-year-old Azmin’s savvy use of social media seems to have endeared him to the youth.
Indeed, 37 percent of Instagram users are under the age of 30, while another 18 percent are between 30 and 49. The trend is the same for Twitter.
This is the same demographic who rallied behind Jokowi, whom Azmin met during a visit to Indonesia last June, and who will be officially sworn as the republic’s president on Oct 20.
The Jokowi imagery may not be too far-fetched.
Defending the controversial Kajang Move in an early episode, PKR director of strategy Rafizi Ramli had likened PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim to the then presidential candidate.
Like Jokowi who moved from Jakarta governor to eyeing the top post, Rafizi said, Anwar will take Pakatan Rakyat from Selangor to Putrajaya.
Plans to make Anwar the Selangor MB may have faltered, but at least the metaphors remain. -M'kini
