Cash handouts under the 1Malaysia's People's Aid programme (BR1M) for the lower-income group will be raised from RM650 to RM950 next year under Budget 2015.
The RM300 increase is for households earning a monthly income of RM3,000 and below, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said when tabling the budget in Parliament today.
"Taking into consideration the increased revenue collection from GST and the affordability of the government, we will increase BR1M from RM650 to RM950.
BR1M was also increased by RM300 for households earning between RM3,000 and RM4,000 a month, which will now receive RM750.
This will also be paid out in three instalments at RM200 each.
Single people aged 21 and above are also entitled to receiving BR1M if they earn a monthly income of not more than RM2,000.
They will get an increase of RM50 to RM350 a year, which will be disbursed early next year, Najib said.
The next-of-kin of BR1M recipients will also receive RM1,000 through a Family Bereavement Scheme that will replace the i-BR1M or group takaful insurance next year.
A total of RM4.9 billion in Budget 2015 will be channelled back to the rakyat through BR1M.
Earlier this month, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had criticised the BR1M programme, saying that Putrajaya should stop the cash aid instead of pulling back fuel subsidies.
He said the sudden fuel price hike would contribute to rising living costs, further burdening the people.
