Bung and Nancy weigh in on Sedition Act

The Sedition Act is defended in Parliament.
bung-mokhtar-parlimenKUALA LUMPUR: Bung Mokhtar Radin delivered an impassioned plea in Parliament that those asking for the repeal of the Sedition Act, be nabbed for sedition themselves.
Bung, who is the Kinabatangan MP, said, “I’m somewhat confused why certain individuals, especially opposition politicians, are keen to see the Act repealed.”
He was of the opinion that those who did had “ill intentions” and “wanted to create chaos”.
Saying the government should be even more vigilant than they already were, Bung also called for the Attorney-General to go ahead and punish the culprits charged with sedition, to the full extent of the law.
Meanwhile Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nancy Syukri said, “I hope the people and Parliamentarians understand what is taking place here because the government is still in the process of considering amending the law or drafting a new law that could complement it.”
She said this in response to a question about PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim telling Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak to keep his pledge to abolish the “draconian” law altogether.
Like Bung, Nancy defended the use of the Act, explaining there were no other laws at present to check those who made remarks that could incite or create chaos in the country.
“We are not at liberty to repeal the Act as and when we please and right now, this is the only law we can turn to.”
