BUT IT STILL INVOLVES A BAN: 'Misunderstood' Umno man clarifies his vernacular schools call
PETALING JAYA - Umno deputy chief for PJ Utara Mohamed Azli Mohemed Saad today said that certain quarters had misunderstood the statement he made in a Malay daily recently on the issue of vernacular schools.
In his attempt to allay criticisms against his alleged call for a debate to abolish vernacular schools at the party's general assembly next month, he said, he did not call for a debate on abolishing vernacular schools.
"I merely suggested either for the vernacular schools to be continued or to have a standardised education system by the government by taking them over, and establishing classes where different languages such as Chinese and Tamil can still be taught.
"Students will stand to benefit from this system as they will learn to respect each other too," he said, adding that he understood that approximately 50 divisions (representatives) have discussed at the divisional level on the same matter recently and may raise the issue (on vernacular schools) at the AGM.
"I'm not sure about this, as I won't be the one who'll be debating it. It's up to the representatives and we can't stop them from discussing it or any other issues then."
He was responding to criticisms from Barisan Nasional's component parties and DAP MPs who slammed his statement made on the matter recently. -Sundaily
