BUT WILL JAKIM SAYS IT'S UNISLAMIC? Men to walk in high-heels to protest violence against womenrds women campaign
KUALA LUMPUR - Take a walk in another person’s shoes?
An advocacy group is going a step further and organising a walk in high heels for men who dare, in a symbolic gesture of the battle to end violence against women.
All Women’s Action Society’s (AWAM) fundraising White Ribbon Campaign Run and Walk 2014, which will be held onDecember 7 in Padang Merbok here, aims to get males to speak out against gender-based violence, amid rising domestic violence cases.
“We want men and young boys to come together and stop the violence and break the silence,” AWAM president Ho Yock Lin told a press conference here today.
White Ribbon Campaign chair Judith Loh said AWAM will work with shoe companies to provide women’s shoes for men to walk in for 100 metres at the walk, after which they can take them off and wear regular shoes for the 3km walk or 7km run.
“We invite the police to walk in women’s shoes because when women go to the police station, the police say ‘go back, be a better wife, be a better mother’,” Loh said, referring to domestic violence cases.
According to police statistics cited by AWAM, domestic violence incidents steadily increased from 3,173 cases in 2010 to 4,123 cases last year, while rape figures dropped from 3,626 cases in 2009 to 2,767 cases in 2013.
Emcee TP Lim, who was at the press conference, said he supported the campaign because he has friends and family members who have experienced gender-based violence.
“I think it’s very important for men to support women, to remind other men to be kind and to protect the women in their lives,” Lim said. -Malay Mail
