De facto PKR leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today expressed confidence that his sodomy conviction would be overturned by the federal court.
"There is no need to pray that I will not be imprisoned. I believe in the law, and according to the law, I should not be jailed.
"Why should my appeal not succeed? There are no facts or evidence so what is the basis for finding me guilty?"
"What excuse will the authorities use for convicting me? The Kajang move? It is already over as the appellate court had used that as an excuse."
Asked whether he had enlisted the aid of foreign leaders, Anwar pointed out that even Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had done the same.
"Has Najib not asked for assistance from United States president Barack Obama on certain issues which Malaysia faced?
"The issue here is defending the principles of freedom, democracy and the rule of law. It is applied and practiced everywhere."
Anwar said the BBC and the Daily Telegraph in England had interviewed him, and he told them that those who upheld these principles would be supported anywhere.
"Why do we support Gaza and Palestine? Because of the cruelty of the Israeli regime.
"The same goes for the plight of the Rohingyas in Myanmar, due to the cruelty inflicted upon them by the regime there.
"This goes to show that our views are consistent and we should not defend cruelty here and talk about justice outside."
Anwar said the sodomy appeal due to be heard by the court next week was not just about him, but innocents being wrongfully imprisoned.
"If your father was sent to jail despite being innocent, would you defend such a decision? This is an issue which should be thought through."
Anwar also took a swipe at Umno for attempting to pit him against Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali, saying it was dirty politics.
"Why would we support Azmin for the position of Selangor menteri besar if we wanted to tie his hands? Even as party deputy president we supported him.
"Why is Umno so busy trying to pit Azmin against me or anyone else? We need a strong and united party, not one wracked by infighting."
Anwar said the unity of PKR was evident during the nomination of candidates for the Selangor menteri besar post.
"We did not agree with certain quarters such as the Selangor royalty who ignored the wishes of the rakyat. Our stance has not changed."
"In the end, we decided to support Azmin and since he took over, the performance of the state administration has been quite admirable."
He was answering questions about an agreement in which Azmin had purportedly signed his resignation as menteri besar.
"I have not received any such email and I even took the trouble to browse through my inbox just in case it was actually sent to me.
"All these allegations and claims originate from Umno, so the email must have been sent to Umno rather than me."
The federal court is scheduled to hear Anwar's appeal on the sodomy conviction on October 28 and 29.
On March 7, the Court of Appeal overturned his sodomy acquittal by the high court two years ago.
The appellate court found Anwar guilty of sodomising his former aide, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan 26, at a unit at the Desa Damansara condominium in Bukit Damansara between 3.10pm and 4.30pm on June 26, 2008.
Anwar was sentenced to five years’ jail but was granted a stay of execution pending an appeal to the federal court.
