DAP ticks off Adenan on water, power rates

CM's condition that a 20 per cent oil royalty must first be paid does not hold water.
TNBKUCHING: Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem’s theory that his administration can only reduce water and power rates in the state if Petronas agrees to a 20 per cent oil royalty, does not hold water, according to DAP Sarawak.
“Syarikat Sesco Bhd can afford to lower tariffs by 30 per cent even without the oil royalty boost,” claims DAP Sarawak Chairman Chong Chieng Jen.
“The Sarawak Government is finding excuses to delay the lowering of the electricity and water tariff in the state.”
He was commenting on Adenan’s statement in Miri on Tuesday on water and power rates.
Chong, who is also Kuching MP and Kota Sentosa Assemblyman, stressed that living costs are escalating and the Sarawak Government should help to ease the financial burden of the people since it can afford to do so.
He pointed out that for the financial year ended December 31, 2013, Sesco made a pre-tax profit of RM408.5 million on revenue of RM2.31 billion.
“Based on the figures above and simple calculations, a 30 per cent reduction of the electricity tariff for the normal customers of Sesco will not cause any loss to the corporation,” said Chong. “The special customers already pay contractual rates under agreement.”
Domestic, commercial and industrial users, all normal customers, pay an average 30 sen per KwH.
Smelting plants in Samalaju, known as “special customers” who last year contributed 30 per cent of Sesco’s revenue and will contribute 40 per cent this year, pay tariff rates negotiated separately under agreements.
