Former top cops want Sedition Act to stay

The group also wants the government to reintroduce all preventive laws which have been removed .
SeditionPETALING JAYA: Former top police officers say the Sedition Act must stay to safeguard Bumiputra status.
The group said that it was needed to protect Islam, Bahasa Melayu as the national language, the position of the rulers, the rights of Malays and other Bumiputeras as well as legitimate interests of other communities.
“The repeal of the Sedition Act like other laws will be a colossal mistake, unhelpful, a setback for the continued peaceful co-existence between the communities and will lead to anarchy,” the group said in a statement today.
Some of the signatories are former IGP Hanif Omar, retired police commissioners Othman Talib and Zaman Khan.
Also in the list is controversial lawyer and former Perkasa vice-president Zulkifli Noordin.
In their statement, the group said the Bar Council’s stand to repeal the law was tantamount to an affront to the basic structure of the supreme law of the land.
“We strongly condemn the action of the Bar in passing the motion to repreal the Act and organising the walk,” the statement read.
The group said the Bar Council was misguided with its notion that the sedition law was inconsistent with freedom of speech as guaranteed in the constitution .
The statement also said the provisions in the Penal Code were insufficient to check on those responsible for causing disharmony, disunity and feelings of enmity.
The group also wants the government to reintroduce all preventive laws which had been removed from the statute book to preserve law and order
